My favorite free things to do in Charleston, SC:
These are my go-to things do in Charleston for free as a local!
1. Charleston Tea Garden
If you’re looking for a free activity in Charleston that’s a little off the beaten path, the Charleston Tea Garden is it.
The Charleston Tea Garden is the only working tea plantation in North America and walking the grounds is free. You can enjoy the lush fields, take photos, and learn about tea production.
If you want more, the trolley tour is inexpensive, making it a charming, budget-friendly outing. Plus, you can sample the various tea flavors for free after the tour in their gift shop.
Pro tip: they have a hand moisturizer in the gift shop that smells amazing! It’s infused with Green and Mango teas.
2. Beach Day at Folly or Sullivan’s Island

A day at the beach in Charleston doesn’t have to cost a thing. Pack a picnic, grab your towel, and soak up the sun. Folly Beach, Sullivan’s Island or Isle of Palms are perfect for a cheap day of relaxation, sandcastle building, or a morning jog along the shore.
I love spending a full day at the beach, and with Charleston’s mild weather, you can usually do it most of the year. We even take our daughter out to play in the sand during winter if the sun is shining!
You will need a car in Charleston to get to the beaches. Parking is usually free along the street, though there are paid lots if you want a more convenient option. It’s one of my favorite local escapes, and there’s nothing better than the sound of waves and the salty air.
3. Pitt Street Bridge

This quiet path in Mount Pleasant is a gem if you’re looking for a free activity in Charleston. It’s a peaceful spot to watch boats float by, enjoy the sunset, or snap photos.
I love going early morning or late afternoon when the water is calm and there are fewer people. It’s a serene, inexpensive escape from the busier downtown areas.
4. Self-Guided Walking Tours of Charleston, SC
Charleston is a city made for walking and one of the best free things to do in Charleston is simply exploring on foot. Map out your own tour of historic streets, alleys, and gardens—you’ll see Rainbow Row, The Battery, and hidden corners that tourists often miss.
I usually take a morning stroll when the light hits the pastel houses just right—it’s free, flexible, and the perfect way to get a feel for the city.
Pro tip: Grab a coffee before to make it feel extra special! I love the Mercado at Sorelle right near The Battery.
5. Walk the Ravenel Bridge in Charleston, SC

For breathtaking harbor views, walking the Ravenel Bridge is one of my favorite free things to do in Charleston. It’s a great early morning or late afternoon activity when the light over the Cooper River is magical.
Just bring comfy shoes, and you’ll get a mix of exercise, history, and some of the best panoramic views of the city—without spending a cent!
6. Angel Oak Tree
If you’re looking for a free activity in Charleston that’s full of awe, visiting the Angel Oak on Johns Island is one not to miss! This ancient tree is massive and beautiful and it’s perfect for photos or a quiet picnic.
Some people say its 500 years old and other say a thousand so who could be too sure! Either way it’s massive and seriously so majestic.
I love taking friends or family here—they’re always amazed at its size and age. It’s a peaceful, budget-friendly way to connect with nature and experience a true local treasure.
7. Waterfront Park & Pineapple Fountain
Waterfront Park is one of those free things to do in Charleston that everyone should experience. The pineapple fountain, harbor views, and swings make it a fun spot for kids and adults alike.
I often grab a coffee and stroll along the pier, or sit on the swings in the evening while watching the sunset—it’s simple, relaxing, and entirely free.
8. Charleston City Market
Even if you’re not buying anything, a walk through Charleston City Market is a great free thing to do in Charleston. You’ll see local crafts, artisan foods, and the energy of downtown. I love going early in the morning before the crowds. It’s budget-friendly and full of local flavor.

9. Tour Charleston’s Historic Churches

Many of Charleston’s historic churches welcome visitors for free or for a small donation. This is a great free thing to do in Charleston because it lets you step inside beautiful architecture and learn a bit of the city’s history.
Even if you don’t go inside, walking around to see some of them is an event itself! Charleston is the HOLY CITY, afterall!
10. Fishing at Mount Pleasant Pier

If you enjoy the water, fishing at Mount Pleasant Pier is a fun, budget-friendly activity. Bring your own gear and enjoy a quiet day casting your line.
I like walking here in the early morning when it’s just me and a few other locals—it’s relaxing, inexpensive, and a unique way to connect with the Charleston waterfront. If you time it just right, you might even get to see a container ship come into port under the bridge.
11. See The Battery, White Point Gardens, & Stroll by Rainbow Row

A walk along The Battery and past Rainbow Row is one of the simplest free things to do in Charleston, but also one of the most memorable. You can’t come to Charleston for the first time and not see this area!
You’ll see historic homes, colorful architecture, and harbor views. I often combine this stroll with a self-guided walking tour downtown—no cost, just charm and history at every turn.
12. Morris Island Lighthouse

While you can’t get right up to the lighthouse, the nearby beaches give you stunning views for free. If you’re looking for a free activity in Charleston that’s iconic and photogenic, this is it.
You just head all the way to the East end of Folly Beach and walk down the trail until you reach the beach and see the lighthouse.
I love walking out here for sunset or golden hour and watching the sunset over the lighthouse. It’s classic Charleston without spending a thing!
13. Dolphin Watching on Shem Creek

One of my favorite free things to do in Charleston is strolling along Shem Creek to spot dolphins. I’ve lived here my whole life and it truly never gets any less magical!
You don’t need a boat tour to see them play in the water—just walk the boardwalk. It’s especially fun in the early morning or late afternoon and the energy of the creek is always lively.
You can also grab a bite or drink at Tavern & Table or Saltwater Cowboys while you’re there.
Pro tip: this is also a fantastic spot for sunset in Charleston!
14. Charlestowne Landing
Charlestowne Landing is a great free thing to do in Charleston for families or history buffs. It is where the first settlers arrived to the area and founded “Charlestowne” as it was originally named.
Trails, picnic areas, and historical markers make it easy to spend a few hours exploring the site of the city’s first European settlement. You can even rent a bike and ride all around the property which I recommend!
It’s free, educational, and peaceful! If you want to tour the museum inside, there is a fee associated with that.
15. Tour the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art
If you’re looking for a free activity in Charleston that’s a little different, the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston is perfect. The rotating exhibitions are always interesting and it’s a budget-friendly stop for art lovers or anyone wanting to see something unique.
16. Mace Brown Museum of Natural History
Another free and fascinating spot is the Mace Brown Museum of Natural History at the College of Charleston. Fossils, minerals, and other natural history exhibits make this a fun, cheap stop for adults and kids alike (especially any Dino lovers).
17. Hampton Park, Charleston

One of Charleston’s largest green spaces, Hampton Park is ideal for a leisurely walk, picnic, or people-watching. If you’re looking for a free activity in Charleston, it’s perfect for a morning stroll or afternoon adventure.
Nestled in a residential area, it’s one of my favorite spots in the whole city and my go-to for morning exercise. Plus, something is always in bloom and it’s so pretty!
There’s a playground for kids, which makes it easy to spend a full morning here and the geese wandering around always delight little ones.
It’s a charming, budget-friendly way to enjoy some local nature without leaving the city.
Pro tip: Don’t miss this in March when the azaleas bloom.
